What is Padel Americano?
Padel americano is the most popular social tournament format in padel. It's a round robin format where players rotate partners every round, play with and against everyone, and track points individually. The player with the most total points at the end wins.
Americano is the go-to format at padel clubs worldwide because it's social (you play with everyone), fair (everyone plays the same number of matches), and exciting (every single point matters for your individual total). Whether you're organizing a casual weeknight session or a club-wide event, americano is the format that works.
Our free padel americano generator handles all the scheduling complexity — partner rotations, court assignments, and point calculations — so you can focus on playing.
Padel Americano Formats
Classic Americano
The standard format. Players rotate partners every round. Each match is played to a set number of points (typically 32). Points are tracked individually — your score in each match adds to your running total. The player with the most total points after all rounds wins.
Mexicano
Similar to americano, but teams are re-paired after each round based on the current leaderboard. The #1 and #4 ranked players team up against #2 and #3, and so on down the rankings. This creates increasingly competitive matchups as the tournament progresses.
Mixicano (Mixed Americano)
Every team consists of one male and one female player. Partners rotate each round, but pairings are always mixed gender. The most inclusive format — perfect for club events that want to bring everyone together.
Team Americano
Fixed teams that stay together throughout the tournament. Each team plays every other team once. Points are tracked per team rather than individually. Best for competitive play.
Padel Americano Rules & Scoring
Points Per Match
Before the tournament starts, agree on the points per match. Common options: 16 points (quick matches, good for large groups), 24 points (the sweet spot for most events), or 32 points (the most popular format, ~25-30 minutes per match).
How Serving Works
Each team serves 4 consecutive points, then the serve passes to the opposing team. This continues until all points are played.
How Points Are Counted
Every point won counts toward your individual total. If your team wins a match 20-12 (in a 32-point match), you get 20 points added to your tournament total, and your opponents each get 12 points. This is what makes americano unique — every point matters, even in a losing effort.
Determining the Winner
After all rounds are completed, the player with the highest total points wins. Tiebreakers: (1) number of match wins, (2) head-to-head points, (3) point differential.
Optimal Number of Players
Americano works best with player counts divisible by 4 (8, 12, 16, 20). This ensures everyone plays every round with no byes. With other numbers (e.g., 6, 10, 14), some players will sit out a round — our generator handles the rotation so byes are distributed fairly.
How Long Will My Padel Americano Take?
| Players | Courts | Rounds | Matches | Est. Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 1 | 3 | 3 | ~1.5 hours |
| 8 | 2 | 7 | 14 | ~2 hours |
| 12 | 3 | 11 | 33 | ~2.5 hours |
| 16 | 4 | 5 | 40 | ~2 hours |
| 20 | 5 | 9 | 90 | ~3 hours |
Tips for Running a Padel Americano
- Use 32-point matches for the best experience. 16-point matches feel rushed. 32 points gives every match substance while keeping the tournament moving.
- Use a divisible-by-4 player count. 8, 12, 16, and 20 players work perfectly. If you have 10 players, consider finding 2 more or running a modified schedule.
- Display standings on a screen between rounds. Part of what makes americano exciting is seeing the live leaderboard. Use a tablet or TV courtside.
- Collect results immediately after each match. Don't wait — have players report their score as soon as the match ends so standings update in real time.
- Play the final round as a "super final." In some variations, the last round uses the leaderboard to create the matchups (#1+#4 vs #2+#3) for a dramatic finish.
- Provide water and towels between rounds. Padel americanos are physically demanding — players are on court for nearly every round with short breaks. Keep hydration available courtside.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between americano and mexicano?
In americano, all matchups and partner rotations are set from the start. In mexicano, teams are re-paired after each round based on current standings — the top-ranked players face each other, creating closer matches as the tournament progresses.
How many points should we play to?
32 points is the most common and recommended. It gives enough time for matches to develop while keeping the tournament on schedule. For shorter events or larger groups, 16 or 24 points works well.
Can I play americano with an odd number of players?
Yes, but it's not ideal. With an odd number, one player sits out each round. Our generator distributes byes fairly. For the best experience, try to have a number divisible by 4.
How is americano different from a regular round robin?
Americano IS a round robin — specifically a switch-doubles round robin where partners rotate and points are tracked individually. The term "americano" is used in padel; the format is the same.
What is mixicano?
Mixicano is mixed-gender americano. Every team has one male and one female player. Partners rotate each round but always remain mixed gender.
Do I need an app to run padel americano?
You don't need an app, but it makes life much easier. Without a tool, you'd need to manually calculate rotations, court assignments, and running totals. Our free generator handles all of this instantly.
